Yesterday I moved hostels to The Ritz (for Backpackers) on Christie’s recommendation after being turfed out of The Base for not checking out on time, even though they did not tell me what time I had to leave and insisted that it was written on the back of each dorm door. It was not on the back of mine. Anyway, I got to The Ritz and it is a lot more friendly and intimate here. Yesterday, I just slept pretty much as the jet lag is still killing me. Apparently it can take anything from 3 days to a week for me to return to a normal cycle. Waking up at about 6pm, I sat in the lounge for a bit, watching highlights of the England game and chatting to the people in the hostel. Then we headed downstairs to the local pub, where the Neighbours night is held on a Monday and had a few pints there. Thought this might help me sleep, it did not. Did not get to sleep until 6am and then awoke at 1pm feeling incredibly guilty for wasting half the day. I have now booked myself onto 3 tours for the rest of the week. Ocean View Road on Sunday, leaving at 7:30am, the Ramsey Street tour on Monday afternoon at 1:00 pm and finally, the Penguins on Phillip Island tour on Wednesday. These should keep me busy and out of trouble for a while. This afternoon, I caught a tram up to Acland Street in St Kilda, where there are the most amazing cake shops and cafes. Having not really eaten since I arrived, I decided to pace myself and not start by eating cakes. I found a lovely little cafe where I ate a toasted focaccia, drank several cups of tea and watched the world go by while studying my Lonely Planet and deciding what to do next. Then I wandered some more, taking in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens, which are small but pleasant. Then I walked long the sea front before taking the tram back to the hostel, but getting off a few stops early to explore a bit more. I feel better for actually doing something today. I have taken some pictures, but I can not upload them on this computer as there is no accessible USB point. Might have to wait till Sydney for them. Think I am off out again tonight to see an acoustic set.
